Giant Talon 4

Product Information

Giant Talon 4 2014 (27.5")

The new Giant Talon 4 is a true all purpose sports mountain bike; designed for the hills, trails and the urban jungle for the rider that wants performance at an affordable price point.

The Talon range has always been popular and they now accommodate the new 650B (or 27.5 inch– hence the name) wheel standard. This alone has significantly improved the performance of the bikes, ensuring that riders get efficiency and control without compromising fit and comfort. The new wheel standard has existed for years and Giant is the first of the larger brands to invest in it so heavily. The reason for this investment is because Giant has approached this scientifically and compared all three wheel sizes (26, 27.5 and 29) to illustrate the benefits and compromises and reached the conclusion that for the majority of riders would be better off on the 27.5 wheel platform.

The 650B wheel size allows Giant to manufacture and design extra-small and small frames, as well as not compromise the geometry like some 29er mountain bikes. For mountain biking, the 27.5 inch wheel gives near enough the best of the other 2 wheel sizes and overall provides the most efficiency and control without compromising on bike handling.

The Talon 4 is built with entry point performance components so that it would be suitable for the slightly more serious rider – the weekend enthusiast. Someone who demands a little more out of their riding and so there is large upgrade primarily in the drive train department.

The drive train now utilises 27 gears and features Shimano Altus front derailleur because it does the least work, Shimano Acera shifters to keep gear shifts smooth and reliable and a Shimano Alivio rear derailleur for precise shifting and smooth gear engagement. Furthermore, the FSA DynaDrive crank and sealed bottom bracket ensures the drive train lasts.

For those wanting to use the Talon 27.5 4 for mountain biking, it’s a worthwhile upgrade over the Talon 27.5 5 simply because of the drive train upgrade and the smoother, more responsive gear changes this results in.

The bike is well suited to the novice and slightly more experience than novice rider. The geometry of the Talon 4 makes climbing hills efficient and gives the rider plenty of control on the fast flowy descents.
